Using RTK GPS Equipment we survey the water/sewer installation recording the asset inventory data (pipe material, diameter, etc...)
and associated attribute information (Manhole Invert level, cover level, valve, FH, etc.....), to produce GIS Record Drawing in line
with Water Service Code of Practice.
Reinstatement areas can be measured, sewer and watermain connection points are accurately located. Connection details are easily
verified on site with Contractors/Designers representative to ensure site knowledge is incorporated within As Built Record of New
Installation and Abandoned lengths are identified/reflected.

The Valley Distribution Improvements Scheme represents a Management Contract between the client Water Service and the Management Contractor, Farrans (Construction) Ltd with Capita
Project Management acting as Project Manager. This network also expands
to include a Design Consultant - McAdam Design, and a number of specialist contractors who work directly to the Management Contractor.
CCS Surveying undertook this contract as a pilot project where the location of over 40kms of water mains along with associated fixtures and fittings were recorded for As Constructed Record production.
The required schemes were issued to our DMU where a CCS 'Project Brief' was complied and issued to the GPS Surveyors. Existing digital network records and base mapping were requested and supplied
from Water Service Eastern Division NIC which provides our teams with the necessary existing information to aid clarity on site.
The GPS Surveyor upon initiation would liaise with the contractor/clerk of works to obtain an insight into the scheme details.
For this sector of work, where high accuracies are required for elevation information, CCS Surveyors use RTK (Real Time Kinematic) GPS equipment
to map and record the network assets. The Surveyors traverse the entire route of the newly installed
network recording all associated surface fixtures and fittings. The 'line of pipe' is also mapped to complete the final survey of the scheme.
Once the survey was complete, the collected data was processed using Ordnance Survey active network GPS data and then finalised in MapInfo
format in line with Water Service's 'Code of Practice
Guidelines for the submission of As Constructed Drawings for Water Service'.
The implementation of the GPS Data Capture Solution on the Valley Scheme has enabled CCS Surveying to liaise with Water Service NIC Staff and
'customise' the processing of
information to best suit the Water Service GIS MapInfo system.
Note: Such has been the success of CCS Surveyings solution on this project, all new watermain installation contracts must now include
this specification (RTK GPS)
within their procurement documents for providing 'As Constructed Records' in Northern Ireland.

CCS Surveying has completed a project
with Colin Buchanan and Partners UK (CBP) on
behalf of Roads Service Northern Ireland. This
project entailed the on-site data capture of
‘Parking Restrictions’ across Northern Ireland using
GPS/GIS handheld units. The traditional methods
applied by CBP included the use of paper prints on
which the required attribute information is manually
detailed by pen and subsequently converted into a
digital form by data entry personnel.
Roads Service was keen to ‘trial’
CCS Surveying’s approach and so under a partnered
agreement with CBP we undertook the project. With
our GPS/GIS solution, the information was now
digitally recorded onto the handheld unit where base
digital mapping and GPS assistance aided the
collection of all necessary data. Yellow lines,
Parking signs, asset conditions and locations made
up some of the data collected on site which was
entered into the handheld unit. Distances from
junctions measuring the extent of the yellow line
were now also surveyed digitally by the use of
‘Laser Distos’. |

CCS Surveying used bespoke data libraries for
the handheld units, which matched the finalised
management software allowing considerable time
saving benefits not only for on-site data collection
but also the transfer of data from site to client.
On a daily basis, the collected information was
downloaded from the unit to our Data Management Unit
(DMU) where it was processed and checked before
issuing to the client.
Such was the success of this trial, that CBP have
now changed their entire Data Collection approaches
on their current UK contracts from manual paper
based methods to a digital system. |
RTK GPS Surveying enables high accuracy levelling to be achieved over many Kilometres without the use of OSNI Benchmarks. Traditional survey methods require many hours to be spent searching for benchmarks to obtain survey control for elevation purposes.
A series of 'Post Processing' exercises are applied to GPS Survey Data to obtain the desired level of accuracy. This elevation accuracy coupled with accurate Northing and Easting co-ordinates provide a secure solution compatible with all leading GIS Formats and Water Service corporate GIS.
| Used to survey the 'crest' of river embankments for flood control and analysis purposes. The benefits of RTK GPS Solution become very apparent in remote locations where high accuracy should not be sacrificed and is achievable through minimal effort. |
